Gianni Infantino, president of the International Football Federation (FIFA), has announced in a surprise move that the organization plans to collaborate with cryptocurrency companies to launch a digital currency called FIFA Coin.

The cryptocurrency will leverage FIFA’s strong global brand, the $170 billion soccer industry and the sport’s 5 billion fans. Infantino made the announcement Friday at the White House Digital Currency Summit.

“FIFA, under my presidency, is very interested in developing FIFA Coin and doing it from here, in the United States,” he said.

Infantino invited those present at the meeting to help FIFA with the project, acknowledging that he was not an expert in the field. He added: "If anyone here is interested, let them work with FIFA. We are here in the United States of America and we will conquer the world of football with FIFA Coin."
